Minister Tasks Architects’ Council, NIA On Architecture Study

ABUJA – Mr. Olamilekan Adegbite, Minister of Mines and Steel Development, has called on the Architects’ Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON) and Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) to overhaul the study of architecture in Nigerian higher institutions of learning.

The minister spoke on Thursday in Abuja at the on-going Archibuilt Expo, holding within the premises of International Conference Centre (ICC).

Archibuilt is an annual programme organized by NIA under the auspices of Architects Development Services Limited (ADSL).

Archibuilt 2019 marks 30 years of showcasing building and construction materials and technologies available in Nigerian and it is a way by which NIA through ADSL continues to contribute to the construction of the construction industry and economic development of the nation.

In his goodwill message, Adegbite, who noted that architecture, as a profession, was going through a lot of challenges such as relevance, urged the profession’s regulatory body and the association to take drastic steps in addressing the study of architecture in Nigerian universities or polytechnics.

“Our profession is facing a lot of challenges, particularly, the challenge, is that of relevance and we need to rise to the occasion, as I believe that these challenges are surmountable.”

He added: “It’s high time we took urgent steps towards reviewing curricula of study of architecture all through Nigeria.”

Chief Victor Attah, former Governor, Akwa Ibom State, who hailed the continuity of Archibuilt exhibition, appealed to the organisers, Archibuilt Board, to come up with a compendium capturing ideas and innovations from the yearly exhibition.

The former governor added that, this move would go a long way to aid the growth and development of the built environment.

Dipo Ajayi, President, Architects Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON), called on participants to think out of the box while exploring local materials for construction purpose.
